Nigeria has once again been plunged into darkness following a national grid collapse, marking the sixth time such an event has occurred in 2024. The collapse, which took place around 6:48 PM on October 14, led to power outages across several states, affecting millions of Nigerians.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) confirmed the grid collapse through a statement, informing customers of the widespread outage. They wrote, “Dear Valued Customer, Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 18:48hrs which has resulted to a loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored.”

Similarly, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) released a notice acknowledging the grid collapse, which has affected supply across its network in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. EEDC’s spokesperson said, “We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo.”

This incident adds to the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with frequent grid collapses exacerbating the already unreliable power supply in the country. Efforts are underway by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and relevant stakeholders to restore power as quickly as possible.
