The Abia State government has intensified its efforts to improve security and infrastructure with the expansion of the “Light Up Abia” project, which now includes the installation of 4,500 solar-powered street lights. The initiative, launched to illuminate key areas across the state, aims to enhance safety and facilitate a 24-hour economy by allowing businesses to operate round the clock.
Much of the solar street lights have been installed in the capital city, Umuahia, and the commercial hub of Aba. This project is seen as a critical component in addressing security concerns, as it ensures that criminals are less likely to operate under the cover of darkness. By lighting up these areas, the government hopes to reduce crime rates and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, stated that this project aligns with the state’s broader strategy to improve infrastructure and reduce energy costs by adopting renewable energy solutions. Additionally, Abia has been selected as one of the beneficiaries of the Nigeria Solar for Health Programme (NISHP), a European Union-backed initiative that aims to provide solar power to healthcare facilities across five states in Nigeria, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to critical health institutions.
The solar street lighting project is part of a broader plan to incorporate clean energy into the state’s infrastructure, with the government contributing 30% of the funding, while the EU supports the remaining 70%.
This marks a significant step forward in Abia State’s commitment to sustainability and modernization.
