The Kwara State government has unveiled plans to construct an Independent Power Plant (IPP) aimed at generating electricity for commercial sale and utilities. This ambitious project, which aligns with the state’s vision for economic growth, was revealed by the Commissioner for Energy, Engr. AbdulAzeez AbdulGaniy, during a media session in Ilorin, the state capital.
According to AbdulGaniy, the proposed IPP will not only foster economic development but also provide substantial employment opportunities across the state. The plant will focus on renewable energy sources, including solar, thermal, and biogas, ensuring environmentally friendly power generation that will help reduce air pollution and promote public health. This initiative reflects the state’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions.
The IPP project is in line with the 2023 Electricity Bill signed by President Bola Tinubu, granting state governments the authority to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. This legislation is expected to drive economic growth, attract investments, and improve infrastructure in Kwara State.
The commissioner highlighted several accomplishments of the Ministry of Energy, such as the procurement and installation of transformers in various communities, including Asa, Moro, Ilorin West, and Kaiama local government areas. Additionally, the construction of an 11KV dedicated feeder from Agba-Dam, and the installation of a 15MVA 33/11KV power transformer to serve Alagbado and Sobi communities, have already been approved by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
“Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is passionate about addressing the energy needs of the people,” AbdulGaniy said, adding that the immediate installation of transformers in Reke, Asa LGA, has also been greenlit by the governor.
